Jimi Hendrix "Machine Gun" (Requiem for Fred Hampton and Mark Clark)

Here is a  new upload to MindsiMedia on You Tube

A musical and video interpretation of the December 4th, 1969 shooting of Illinois Black Panther leader Fred Hampton and by members of the Chicago Police and agents the office of state attorney Edward Hanrahan, an event that proved seminal in postwar American race relations social history. It is recounted through interwoven sound and film footage of the January 1st, 1970 concert performance by Jimi Hendrix, Buddy Miles, and Billy Cox (under the impromptu name, "A Band of Gypsys") at the Fillmore East theater in New York City's East Village and archival video of the Vietnam era. The short film features a vivid split-screen montage (evocative of Canadian director Norman Jewison's 1968 "The Thomas Crown Affair') of the turmoil, violence and pyrotechnical chaos that engulfed U.S. domestic and international politics in that epoch.

Seen On The Road The Peacock & A Snake

I spend a lot of time driving around Chicago and am always seeing something interesting. Last night and today I saw two animals, or more accuraetly tributes to wild animals.

Last night while on the cities north side I saw the glorious colors of Peacock Liquor store in full bloom.

And this morning while driving on Harlem Ave. through Chicago's southwest side I was riding with the Snaake.

Janis Joplin & Big Brother 1967 Television Concert

I was looking for some Janis Joplin videos to put on my Psychedelic & Early Classic Rock playlist last night. For these playlists I like to find interesting live performances and did I find a winner for this one. There were four videos posted from an April 25, 1967 Big Brother & the Holding Co. television concert on San Francisco station KQED. This would be just a few weeks before they was to make their legendary performance at Monterrey Pop. This show is a real treat the sound is good and the band is outstanding. Here is the clip of them burning through "Ball & Chain".

Junction 88 A 1940's Black Musical w/ Noble Sissle & Cab Calloways Screen Debut

Today on MindsiMedia we uploaded a couple of films from the early days of African American cinema.

Junction 88 pt.1, 1940's Black Musical w/ Noble Sissle, Eubie Blake's Partner

Junction 88 is the name of the small town where this musical story takes place. For the most part it's a lightweight film with a pop tin pan alley sound. A girl is in love with a musician her father thinks she should marry someone with a steady job. A famous bandleader comes to town to find the musician but has a fictitious name and can't find and it all works out in the end. Stop me if you've heard this before.

The movie features the charms of Pigmeat Markham but the real start of the show is the bandleader who played by one black popular musics pioneers Noble Sissle. He was a pioneering African American jazz musician and composer who got his start in vaudeville performing with his partner Eubie Blake. They performed as the Dixie Duo and developed a musical revue called "Shuffle Along". It premiered as a musical in 1921and went on to  become the first Broadway production written and performed by black people. Among the hit songs from Shuffle Along are "I'm Just Wild About Harry" and "Love Will Find a Way."

He went onto a thirty year career as a bandleader and is known as the man who brought Lena Horne into prominence in the 30's. Later in the 1950's he became a disc jockey in New York City. He passed away in 1975.

Here we see the screen debut of Mr. Cab Calloway doing that thing he does. THE classic "Minnie The Moocher" with him doing some serious steppin. Then a trippy cartoon from Fleischer studios starring the one and only Betty Boop. Join her on a nocturnal excursion where she encounters Bimbo. Hi De Ho! Sorry about the crappy sound though.

Riding The Rails Two Chicago Train Stories

Today we have a couple of stories that revolve around trains in Chicago. One of the reasons Chicago became the metropolis it is because of it's role as a hub for a lot of the nations rail activity. In addition the city has an extensive system of commuter tracks. So the area has a rich history of railroad stories. Our first story is about miles of what seem to be abandoned freight  cars

The Orphan Freight Cars On Chicago's Blue Line Oak & Forest Park

Published ChiTownView Feb 9, 2013

I take the blue line downtown and back from the Forest Park station and for at least the last three months I've noticed this long line of train cars that stretch from west of Des Plaines in Forest Park all the way east to almost Austin. That's almost a couple of miles of freight cars that have just been sitting there for more than three months. It just seems odd, Has anyone else that rides the blue line noticed this? Video is in double speed.

The Chicago Railroad Fair's "Wheels A-Rolling" Pageant Late 1940's, Color

Our second train story is about a Chicago exposition that took place in 1948 & 49 and was held in Burnham park, on Lake Michigan between 21st & 31st streets. It celebrated 100 years of railroading or more precisely 100 years of the first train to operate out of Chicago. It was a tremendous success with all manner of railroading equipment on display.

There was also the "Wheels A-Rolling" pageant which traces the development of railroads & Chicago. This is what this film shows us. For more about the fair visit the Wiki page.

Roosevelt VP Henry Wallace, Interview & Facism Op Ed

Henry Wallace is probably one of America's most successful progressive public servants. As Secretary of Agriculture his policies helped the American farmer recover from the great depression. He was picked by Roosevelt to be Vice President in 1940 but his nomination was opposed by the more corrupt elements of the Democratic party. Roosevelt had to threaten to withdraw from the race in order to get him in. Four years later in the face of party revolt Wallace was replaced by Truman who many considered a compromised politiian. Wallace served as commerce secretary under Truman although many of the powers of the office were given to other departments.

I found this interview with Mr. Wallace while going through the Library of Commerece. It's from the early 1950's and after some general conversation  about the upcoming presidential election  Mr Wallace identified south Asia as the area of greatest concern and how we might encourage development.

As it would happen I came across an extensive article about Wallace on this morning so I thought I would share some of that with you.

"In the late 1930s and early 1940s, only FDR eclipsed Wallace - Roosevelt's secretary of agriculture (1933-1940) and then his vice president (1941-1944) - in popularity with the American people. Stone's documentary series and book portray Wallace as a true American hero, a "visionary" on both domestic and foreign policy. Today, however, Wallace is a mostly forgotten figure. If Stone's work helps restore Wallace's rightful place in our history and piques the curiosity of younger Americans to learn more about this fascinating person, it will have served an important purpose."

And here is a taste of that. Stone series.

One of the nails in Mr. Wallace's coffin in 1944 might well have been this April 1944 op ed he published in the New York Times about the dangers of American facisim. A very interesting read to say the least. This is also found at Truthout here's a couple of the more interesting tid bits.

"American fascism will not be really dangerous until there is a purposeful coalition among the cartelists, the deliberate poisoners of public information, and those who stand for the K.K.K. type of demagoguery...........The symptoms of fascist thinking are colored by environment and adapted to immediate circumstances. But always and everywhere they can be identified by their appeal to prejudice and by the desire to play upon the fears and vanities of different groups in order to gain power...............Still another danger is represented by those who, paying lip service to democracy and the common welfare, in their insatiable greed for money and the power which money gives, do not hesitate surreptitiously to evade the laws designed to safeguard the public from monopolistic extortion. "

An Image From Heaven? God?

I have some pictures of space taken from the Hubble and other sources I've collected over the years and have been using one as my backdrop. There were some portions of the picture that looked interesting that I wanted to isolate. So opened the photo to do some cropping and discovered something that looks like a face in a portion of the picture. A small section of the universe looks like a face. Take a look at the larger picture in the lower left quadrant there is a ghostly image. See it?

Then there's the smaller photo of that image cropped and while I admit it doesn't really strengthen my idea. But still to me it still looks like it might be something a message perhaps maybe another form of intelligence is saying we see you. We know what you look like. Is it God? Is it a message from him? I myself am not a Christian and don't have any association with organized religion. So I'm not pushing any point of view it's just something interesting I found staring off into space. Just a nonbeliever who finds it interesting. Anybody else see it?

Debut Of The Sherman Tank Mounted With Rockets, In Action

Uploaded to MindsiMedia You Tube  on Feb 3, 2013
As a child I was fascinated with tanks, machine guns, flamethrowers and other exotic weapons of war. I was trolling the Library of Congress for interesting videos when I came across a public domain newsreel that promised a Sherman tank firing rockets. It gave me an immediate flashback to those days at the library so I had to check it out and it was pretty cool. It was the first time the weapon was shown to the press. They show how they are loaded as well as the blast off as it launches sixty 4 1/2" rockets. That is one bad ass tank and I don't usually use that word.

Andy Warhol's "Lonesome Cowboys" & Wakefield Poole "Boys In The Sand"

We have made some new additions to our Andy Warhol,Velvet Underground & other 60's NYC Art Stuff playlist. Among the items we added are a couple worth pointing out. First we fond a copy of Warhol & Paul Morisssey's 1968 western satire entitled “Lonesome Cowboys”. It was filmed in late January in Tucson on a set that had been used a few times by John Wayne.

It contains a rape scene that landed Andy on the FBI's watch list. Responding fro a citizens compliant the feds investigated but never charged Andy. In August while the film was playing in Atlanta the film was seized and the theater manager arrested. Now a days you can see it right here.

Also of interest were a couple of film clips by Wesley Poole pop artist and gay porn pioneer. Mr. Poole was who was a NYC contemporary of Warhol's.

The CIA & Brainwashing Program That Created The Hippies ? And a Quick Look @ The 1980 Election

Uploaded by MindsiMedia 2/2/13
Project Mind Control” is a fascinating look at government sponsored brainwashing experiments that were conducted chiefly by the CIA in the 1950's & 60's. It is a 1979 ABC News report that was considered important enough to be included in the National Archives making it available for anyone to watch and pass on. It examines the a number of government projects where citizens were used in mind control experiments. In the end it concludes that a large part of the 60's counter culture might have been blowback (unintended consequences) from these experiments.

'It was fun, fun, fun. Where else could a red-blooded American boy lie, kill and cheat, steal, deceive, rape and pillage with the sanction and blessing of the all highest.'"
Col. George Hunter White alias Morgan Hall

Mr. White was an agent for the Bureau of Narcotics who went on to a second career as as CIA operative. One of his assignments was to set up clandestine safe houses where prostitutes and other lowlifes were given drugs. Mr White was also a diarist whose diary were donated to an obscure California college by his widow following his death.

Also covered in the report is the story of Frank Olson a government scientist and unwitting
guinea pig who was dosed with LSD and thrown to his death from the 13th floor of a NY hotel when he stumbled on CIA clandestine torture facilities overseas. Another story covered is about the five years of experiments carried out in Canada by Scottish doctor Ewen Cameron. Here is The Sleep Room a Canadian movie that tells this part of the story.

MK-ULTRA was the name of the CIA's mind control project and they claim that it was unsuccessful. Or was it? The explosion of drug use during the 60's created and the criminalizing of that use created the perfect enemy for paranoid right wing conservatives.

It is a bogeyman that has enabled them to carry out a unprecedented war on drugs while at the same time using illegal drugs as a way to fund their clandestine activities. It is a double edged sword that continues to to be used. On the one hand we send people to jail for using pot while at the same time in Afghanistan we turn a blind eye to the heroin trade that our allies their engage in. But it happens because too any of us turned a blind eye when all this stuff came out in the late 1970's.

The election of Jimmy Carter touched off a series of Senate investigations into clandestine government projects like this and others including the assassination of president Kennedy. The CIA responded to these investigations by sandbagging Jimmy Carter's 1980 reelection and then who runs for president in 1980 but former CIA chief George Bush. He loses the nomination to Reagan but ends up serving as vice president. And of course goes on to become president himself.

How was Carter "sandbagged"? Two major ways in July of 1980 their was a coup in Bolivia that resulted in right wing military officers with ties to drug dealers took over the country. What wasn't known at the time was that it was a coup backed by the CIA. This is what former highly decorated former DEA agent Mike Levine reports in his book "The Big White Lie". The book is out of print but here's a link to a post about it

Then there is the highly controversial story about the secret dealings with Iran by "the Reagan election team". These were deals that held off releasing the hostages until Reagan took office (which happened) in return the Iranians received weapons, through Israel, and had some of their assets unfrozen. These allegations are made by the former president of Iran  Abulhassan Banisadr, National Security Council member Gay Sick and Reagan White House staffer Barbra Honegger. Wikipedia offers a pretty good report about his story
