Iceland. Where They Jail The Bankers, Bailout The People & Prosper. How Did They Do This?

I came across this story on the Nation of Change site on how the criminals got jailed and the people who needed help got it.

".....Krugman also says: A funny thing happened on the way to economic Armageddon: Iceland’s very desperation made conventional behavior impossible, freeing the nation to break the rules. Where everyone else bailed out the bankers and made the public pay the price, Iceland let the banks go bust and actually expanded its social safety net. Where everyone else was fixated on trying to placate international investors, Iceland imposed temporary controls on the movement of capital to give itself room to maneuver. Krugman is right. Letting the banks go bust – instead of perpetually bailing them out – is the right way to go. We’ve previously noted: Iceland told the banks to pound sand. And Iceland’s economy is doing much better than virtually all of the countries which have let the banks push them around. Bloomberg reports: Iceland holds some key lessons for nations trying to survive bailouts after the island’s approach to its rescue led to a “surprisingly” strong recovery, the International Monetary Fund’s mission chief to the country said......"

Interesting post and my first thought was how did this happen? What makes Iceland different? Then I remembered they had a fairly advanced program of developing geothermal power and wondered if perhaps that had a hand in it. And I found out that the answer was, perhaps indeed.  From the Ecology Global Network I learned.

"Iceland’s energy needs, more than any other country in the world, are predominantly met by renewable energy sources.  Over 70 percent of Iceland’s energy needs are met by renewable energy sources with imported coal and oil making up the rest.  Practically all of Iceland’s electricity is provided by renewable sources with well over 80 percent coming from hydroelectric and the rest coming from geothermal (heat from within the Earth)......"

Then I came across a speech given by the President of Iceland Olafur Ragnar Grimsson. Who credits his country's renewable energy program not for standing up to the bankers but for helping to create the economic boon the country is now enjoying. In the same speech credits the fact that ordinary citizens constantly were demonstrating in front of the capitol building as the government was meeting on how to deal with the crisis. They even formed citizen groups to put forward proposals to the legislators. We can now see why they authorities were keen to make sure last years Occupy protests didn't get to that level.

Robert Johnson And The Development of Intellectual Property

Back in the 1920's & 30's Robert Johnson wrote & recorded a song called “Me and the Devil Blues” He had a short life and died broke nobody was much interested in what he'd done or portecting his rights when he was living. Yet his spirit lives on and his voice can still be heard today. Of course his music is now considered intellectual property and is owned bought and sold by people who have for the most part never heard Robert Johnson or his music.

This was highlighted for me recently when I was doing some paperwork for one of my YouTube stations. When you use material other people created you have to have the right to do that. Sometimes there are disputes that you where you have to submit your proof that have rights to uses the material.

A lot of times it's not the film or video that is in dispute but music used on it. So you get these notices from You Tube and it shows the company (ies) that are claiming rights. ANYWAY I got a notice about a movie named Crossroads and in one scene they used the above named Johnson tune. Ans here is a list of companies claiming rights.

Robert Johnson-Me and the Devil Blues", sound recording administered by:
SME
finetunes
[Merlin] Essential Music
Kontor New Media
INgrooves
Believe

Six different companies!!!!!!! It's not a big story or anything but it's kind of interesting and a good reason to post a clip of the song.

 & What is Intellectual Property?

The protesters were met by Femen, a Ukrainian activist group whose members went topless and donned nun habits in support of gay marriage............Topless Femen activists dressed as nuns met the Catholic protesters, according to Gay Star News. The "nuns" sprayed powdered "sperm" from bottles and chanted pro-gay slogans. They donned the phrase "In Gay We Trust" on their bare chests."

Santa Claus Vs. The Devil, Amazing Mexican Holiday Treat

A kiddie film from the late 1950's that is odd to say the least. It could be best described as a propaganda film. The devil sends Pitch, one of his henchman, to disrupt the holiday season. This pitch fellow looks pretty much like the devil; red suit, horns and supernatural powers. Santa enlists Merlin to help him foil Pitch's plans. Good clean fun for all.

The Chicago Cubs, Major Leauge's First Dynasty, A Sox Fans Christmas Gift To Cub Fans

Well they weren't called the Cubs and they didn't play at Wrigley field but the team that went on to become the Cubs were major league baseball's first dynasty. I'm a tried and true Chicago White Sox fan and would normally be the last person to be aware of this fact let alone be talking about it. But in my recent research into the history of the Taylor street area on Chicago's near west side I came across a couple of sites that used to house Chicago's national League team. Then I read about some of the heights achieved by this team and thought I would share some of this story. Let's just say it's a Christmas present to all my Cub fan friends.

The Chicago White Stockings were one of the eight original National League teams that began play in 1876.They would be league champs that year rolling up a record of 52-14. In the first ten years they would lead the league five times. Then in the first decade of the twentieth century it would set records that have never been equaled. During this time their name would change to the Colts then the Orphans It wasn't until 1901 that they became the Cubs. They would also change addresses four times this is video takes a look at two different locations not even a mile apart.

Their first west side home was near Halsted and Congress on Chicago's near west side from 1885 to 1891. They were led by player / manager Cap Anson and players like Billy Sunday and Marty Sullivan. They were National League champs the first two years at the new park. Including 1885 where they were winners of an early version of the World Series.

The place had it's problems it only held 10,000 people and the park was shaped like a bathtub with the foul lines only 215'. It also shared the space with a bicycle racing track that encircled the already crowded field. One additional note on September 21 1888 three White Stockings players were arrested flirting with Mrs. Seth Blood, the proprietor of a "house" just beyond the wall at old West Side Park. What kind of "house" it was was never clarified but in Chicago at that time vice was king.

Then they have no real home for a couple of years, earning the name orphans, before settling back to the west side in 1893 near Ashland and Congress not far from the old park. Here is where they would develop some exciting new players including the famed combo of Tinkers, Chance & Evans. The Chicago Daily News decides to nickname this young team the Cubs. Than name sticks and in 1903 it becomes official.

By the middle of the decade they were a dynasty at one point winning 538 games out of a possible 765 games. No team has ever done something like that. They were National League champs in 1906,07,08 & 1910 and World Series Champs in 07' and '08. In 1906 they won a record 116 games but would end up being beaten by by crosstown rivals the Chicago White Sox. Known as the hit less wonders. The Cubs would continue to play here without much success until 1915 when they moved. Perhaps they felt they were to close to their upstart rivals the White Sox who were playing not far away.

One more little nugget about the old ball park is that it is where the term “out of left field” came from. As in; the idea was from out of left field meaning it's not a normal or “traditional” idea. The saying began here because beyond the left field wall was an insane asylum and people in the park could hear the moans and babbling of the patients.

They ended up on the north side at Weegham park which became Wrigley field in 1925. And although there have been some World Series games played here no World Series winning team have called Wrigley home.

Angry Old White People, Part 2 (More Obama "plots")

So the GOP, which is composed for a large part by angry old white men who don't believe in science, continues it's soul searching since their electoral defeat at the begining of November. Well no really they continue to flail about and whine like spoiled children looking for someone else to blame. I presented a few of these sad pathetic cases last week and now since they continue to live in denial and come up with bizarre theories we are offering this followup.

From Mother Jones

Top Georgia GOP Lawmakers Host Briefing on Secret Obama Mind-Control Plot

".....The meeting consisted of a PowerPoint presentation followed by a 90-minute screening of the anti-Agenda 21 documentary, Agenda: Grinding America Down. It was emceed by Field Searcy, a local conservative activist who was forced out of the Georgia Tea Party in April due to his endorsement of conspiracy theories about the president's birth certificate and the collapse of World Trade Center Tower 7. The presentation also featured a special video cameo from conservative talking-head Dick Morris in which the former Clinton aide warns that Obama "wants to force everyone into the cities from whence our ancestors fled."
About 23 minutes into the briefing, Searcy explained how President Obama, aided by liberal organizations like the Center for American Progress and business groups like local chambers of commerce, are secretly using mind-control techniques to push their plan for forcible relocation on the gullible public:....."

Which makes the following story seem almost reasonable in comparison. From Huffington Post

Charlie Webster, Maine GOP Chair, Alleges That Black Voters Came To Rural Towns To Vote

"Charlie Webster, the outgoing Maine Republican chairman, claimed Wednesday in an interview that "hundreds" of black voters cast ballots in rural Maine towns, contributing to the party's losses.
"In some parts of rural Maine, there were dozens, dozens of black people who came in and voted on Election Day," he said in an interview with WSCH TV. "Everybody has the right to vote, but nobody in town knows anybody that's black -- how did that happen? I don't know. We're going to find out."
Pressed on where it happened, he said it happened in "several rural Maine towns." He added that without a voter ID law or "way to check," voting was "fraught for abuse."
Webster stood by the claim in an interview with the Portland Press Herald. "I'm not talking about 15 or 20. I'm talking hundreds," he said. "I'm not politically correct and maybe I shouldn't have said these voters were black, but anyone who suggests I have a bias toward any race or group, frankly, that's sleazy.""

Mr. Webster has since issued some self serving bullshit statement "explaining" his comments.

And finally for some real insight as to why the Republicans failed in the last election here's some thoughts from Rachel Maddow.

Why The Twinkie Had To Die & How To Make Your Own

It's a sad day for people out there who like to eat highly processed crap fashioned into tasty snacks like Twinkies and Ding Dongs. It owners of the company liquidated because their employees wouldn't give up more of their pay and benefits. I haven't been a big consumer of their products recently but at one time had a real weakness for Susie Q's. So when I heard the news about this situation my first thought was well why not raise the price of your product? Wouldn't that be a fairly simple way to remedy the problem? I mean if your going to pay a buck for this stuff your not going to stop buying it if it goes up to a buck and quarter. And then I came across an explanation on the Daily Kos site.

'Hostess Brands is a microcosm of what’s wrong with America'

by Laura Clawson  Follow for Daily Kos Labor

"These union members had faced a slow bleed for years. The only question for them was whether to accept an accelerated bleed and hope it would stop in a few years—but hope that in the knowledge that that was not a priority or even necessarily a desirable outcome to Hostess' private equity owners—or to fight for what they earned. We're hearing, and can expect to keep hearing, a lot about how it's so unreasonable of union members to expect to get the pay and benefits they negotiated and worked for, the pensions they've planned their retirements around. Because this is coming after a generation-long war on pensions and unions and middle-class wages. As AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka said in a statement, "What’s happening with Hostess Brands is a microcosm of what’s wrong with America, as Bain-style Wall Street vultures make themselves rich by making America poor.""

So another American icon thrown into the dust bin of history because of corporate greed. Oh well.

But don't despair we here at MindsiMedia are here to help. We have scoured the Internet and found a video to show you how to make your own Twinkies. Cheers!

A 2 Headed Winged Creature & Other Odd Old Building Ornamentation 814 Diversey, Chicago

I was walking down Diversey, on Chicago's north side, the other day when I noticed the building at 814. It has some very odd building ornamentation. Winged two headed creatures, some kind of odd dragon. At any rate I took some photos and a short video clip. Does anybody out there know anything about this buildings history?

Another Film Noir Double Feature w/ Harvey Kitel & Jack Palance

Here are two more reviews of film noir movies that we have recently watched. This time we have two films that are from opposite ends of the crime spectrum. One is a solid recommendation but with a word of warning and the other a take it or leave it.

The Man In The Attic

This 1953 film is in black & white both literally & figuratively as it is firmly in the traditional mold where we know who the good & bad guys are and there is no doubt that the righteous will prevail. After a few close calls.

Jack Palance plays Slade a pathologist who rents a room from the Harley's. They are a family living in White Chapel during the reign of terror Jack the Ripper was carving into Britain at the time. We quickly see he is an strange man who keeps odd hours. After the ripper is seen with a small black bag Slade burns his. The Harley's also have a beautiful young niece that the stranger is magnetically drawn to. The lead detective on the case is also attracted to her so you can pretty much sketch out the plot from here.

This is not a great movie by any means or even a very good one. But it was well made and held my attention the whole time. There are a couple of well done musical numbers worked into the story as well as a nice little scene where one of the ripper's victims is getting undressed. It livens up what otherwise might have been a very dull film.

If you want to find out for yourself here's a link to see the whole movie.

The Bad Lieutenant

This on the other hand is a bad ass movie that's in color but it's all black. Harvey Kitel just goes right over the edge as Lt. It starts off innocently enough we get some sports talk over the credits as a father takes his two young sons to parochial school one morning during the Mets / Dodgers World Series. The image begins to unravel within five minutes as we see him snorting coke as soon as the kids leave the car. While he's still across from the school.

From here on in we are “treated” to a look at a this cops one way trip to hell. He is not on the edge but way over it and his world is collapsing all around him. Every manner of corruption and defilement is exposed and dweled upon. There's the foul things that he forces a couple of innocent teenage girls to endure. And the unspeakable crimes committed against a nun. It gets so bad that Jesus comes down off the cross in the end.

This is a well done cesspool of a film that has the power to hold you from beginning to end and if you go for this kind of extreme entertainment well this ones for you. It's not as overtly violent as “I Spit On Your Grave” or “The Last House On The Left” but in those movies there is a good fighting the evil. In the Bad Lieutenant there is no good just a black hole at the center sucking everything up.

It is the work of east coast auteur Able Ferrara who works a lot of the same territory as Martin Scorsese east coast Catholic guilt and all. He got started about ten years after Martin so you 'll know he must have spent a lot of time growing up watching Mean Streets & Taxi Driver. Another of my favorites by him is The King of New York with Christopher Walken in the lead. Good stuff for sure. I've included a clip from that as well.

Updates From The Sad World of Angry Old White People

America wakes up to find; President Obama reelected, marijuana & gay marriage legalized in two states. The world of angry old white men has just received a kick in the sack. Hip hip hooray! You can spin any way you want but it was a bad day for the Fox News / GOP rightwing freak show.

This morning I thought it might be fun to take a look at some of last nights sad losers.

Ted Nugent Declares 'I Will Either Be Dead or in Jail' if Obama Is Re-elected

Last April Ted was speaking at a NRA event when he made this statement and we can only hope he is a man of his word.

And on the subject of uncle Ted let's take look at the story that this tough guy gun nut avoided the draft by, among other things, shitting himself. He told this story in a High Times interview and has since said that he / they made it up. Also he claims that he got out of the draft with a student deferment. An examination of his selective service does show that he did fail his physical exam. There is a fairly extensive examination of this story is found at snopes.com

Donald Trump: Election Is 'Total Sham And A Travesty,' Suggests 'Revolution' Is Necessary

In the news of today we have this tired old windbag checking in.

“Popular vote totals at the time of his tweet showed Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney with a narrow lead over Obama, with votes still left to count.
In a later tweet, Trump called the Electoral College, which allowed observers to call the election for Obama at around 11:12 p.m. on Tuesday night, a "disaster for a democracy." Twelve years ago, many Democrats would have likely agreed, as a hotly contested race in Florida gave the 2000 presidential election to Republican George W. Bush, who lost the popular vote.
It remains to be seen whether Trump has had an honest revelation in favor of electoral reform or is simply upset that Obama's victory deprived him of an opportunity to tweet "You're Fired!" on Tuesday night. '

Of course the President has gone on the beat Romney by more than three million votes.

What did the Sheldon and Miriam Adelson get for their money? (Not much)

Meanwhile we have the scorecard for Sheldon Adelson billionaire casino owner who spent over $50,000,000 on candidates to advance his right wing agenda. Why would a man spend that much money? Is there something he's afraid of? Lets Take a look at couple of his problems,

“A new investigation finds Adelson may have violated the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act by paying a Macau lawyer hundreds of thousands of dollars, all in a bid to get approval for his projects in Macau, a special administrative region in China. Billions in profits were on the line.”

“The WSJ wrote that the U.S. Attorney’s office in Las Vegas is looking into whether Sands and its executives violated U.S. anti-money laundering laws by failing to report suspicious activity by two big-spending gamblers.
The investigation involves Zhenli Ye Gon (who has been indicted on counts of trafficking methamphetamine ingredients) and Ausaf Umar Siddiqui, (a former executive of Fry’s Electronics who went to jail on bribe charges) who wired tens of millions of dollars to the Sands Venetian casino in Las Vegas during the mid-2000s.”

And finally from the truly weird world of Glen Beck we get these deep thoughts.

Denim Magnate Glenn Beck: If Obama Wins, ‘We Have To Be Destroyed’

“Back behind the mic, it seems the Fox-dropped zealot is still doing what he does best: scaring the ever-living shit out of his flock with Biblical messages of fire and brimstone. Beck on Monday said that if the American people are “so dead inside that they can no longer see the difference between good and evil” — aka re-electing a demagogue like President Obama — then “we have to be destroyed because we will be a remarkable evil on this planet.””

African Psychedelic Music, A Look @ & Listen To ‘Sir’ Victor Uwaifo

On my MindsiMedia You Tube station we have a playlist of African / psychedelic music. This morning I was looking around for some new clips to add to it when I came across the sounds and story of ‘Sir’ Victor Uwaifo. A fascinating guitarist / artist from Nigeria. Here is a link to a post about him and a look and listen to his music and art.

“His biggest hit, “Guitar Boy and Mamiwater” (1966), was inspired by his encounter with a mermaid while lounging on a beach. The incident (which he swears is true) also inspired him to invent a “revolving guitar”.“

Voodoo Man, Bela Lugosi 1940's Cult Film Gem

Now this mid 1940's film is an unsung classic B horror movie that we have just added to our Midnight Movie playlist. I've been watching horror movies for some fifty years and really enjoy the films from the 1930's through the 70's and I'd never heard of Voodoo Man, Then I was on the archive.org site looking for new things to add to my station when I came across Voodoo Man. It looked like something that would fit in nicely with our other cinematic offerings so I downloaded it.

Then as I was editing Voodoo Man into 15 minute chunks and doing some research on it I became intrigued. After all anything with both Lugosi & Carradine in it had to be worth a look. So after uploading it I sat down to give it a look. Now if your looking for a “great” movie that will scare the pants off you Voodoo Man is not the one. But if you want a little more than an hours worth of bad movie greatness watch this film.

Bela Lugosi stars as Dr. Marlowe who lives out somewhere in small town America. He has a small gang of flunkies led by John Carradine who delivers a creepy performance as Toby the conga drum playing head stooge. They have an elaborate trap to kidnap beautiful young women traveling alone. The doctor needs young women because he is trying to revive his wife who has been dead for 25 years.

Into trhis setup walks Ralph Dawson a Hollywood scriptwriter on his way back east to get married. He runs out of gas and is hitchhiking when.........If you want to find out what happens next you'll just have to watch the movie.

My Vote For President Goes To....

President Obama because has done an acceptable job, Mitt Romney has nothing to offer and no one else has a chance.

1/11/12

George McGovern died this year. He was the first person I ever voted for. That was forty years ago and this year I'll be casting my tenth presidential vote. I am a Democrat because they best represent my values. Back when McGovern ran they still fought for them. Since then the political system has become so corrupted by the influence of big money, the one percent of last falls American spring. That those values that Democrats fought for have increasingly become window dressing covering up ownership of both parties by the interests of big wealth. We have returned politically to the days of post Civil War America.

Four years ago when I voted for Barack Obama it was one of the few times that I was feeling good about who I was voting for. On the night of the election four years ago I was down in Grant Park celebrating it was a beautiful moment. Below I've posted a video from that night. The time since then he has disappointed me more often than not and in some very fundamental ways. But he has my vote again because he has been true to his word. On the one hand he hasn't done what I hoped he would do like investigate and prosecute the Bush administration over Iraq or Wall Street over the financial collapse. On the other hand he never said he was going to. He said he was going to bring the country together. So to go after bush would have so polarize the political process that Obama wouldn't be able to bring the country together. Of course the GOP said screw you buddy were going to do everything we can to keep you from succeeding and have spent the last four years doing just that. And the President didn't go after Wall street because it would have exposed his own parties part in the financial collapse. Is it the right thing to do? No it's not but it's not enough to keep me from supporting his reelection.

Hey I 'm from Chicago and know it's history. So I understand that both parties are corrupted. All you have to do is follow the money. I'm used to seeing politicians who are bought and paid for. But Barack Obama talks like a president, carries himself like a president and leads like a president. That's why I'm voting for him. That and the fact that Mitt Romney is a man who has made a fortune by enriching himself by destroying the American dream for so many. His business model has helped greatly shrink the middle class. And on top of it he has carried himself and conducted a campaign that does not inspire any great trust in what kind of leadership he would provide.
